Activity Holidays and Outdoor Pursuits in Orkney and the Shetland isles

Orkney Islands

There are no mountains in the Orkney Islands (the highest elevation is only 1560 feet) but that doesn't mean there is no scope for activity holidays and outdoor pursuits! In fact the islands (all 67 of them!), which lie off the northern tip of Scotland, offer some truly awesome outdoor possibilities. The diving in Scapa Flow - home to countless wrecks from both world wars - draws divers from around the world. The sea stack known as The Old Man of Hoy is one of the definitive tests for ambitious rock climbers. And that's not all in the way of outdoor activities- there are 24 graded cycle routes, there's canoeing, fishing, sailing (very good sailing too!), stupendous wildlife possibilities, golf...and the added bonus that it hardly ever gets dark in summer!

Shetland Islands

With over 100 islands and 1450 km of coastline surrounded by crystal clear waters, it is no surprise that some of Shetland's best activity holidays and outdoor pursuits are connected with the sea. If you are looking for wildlife, you will find there are many more puffins, gannets and guillemots to be found than people (not to mention the porpoises, seals and whales) making the Shetlands a real haven for bird watchers. While with hundred of shipwrecks scattered around the islands, underwater activity enthusiasts of all standards will find something worth diving for. Back on dry land, walkers and cyclists are welcome - and well-catered for too!
